How To Stop Your Lawn Turning To Straw Over Summer.
It’s frustrating, that just when you are wanting to enjoy your lawn, it looks like a desert. A problem new to the UK, caused by Summer temperatures leading to the drying of lawns and the soil beneath. Customers can reduce the effect of the higher temperatures by watering each morning. However, this is not always easy to maintain.
But there’s no need to worry Lawnscience’s HeatShield Wetting Agent applications can help you enjoy your lawn throughout the year.
Lawnscience’s wetting agents can be applied from March, watch the video below to learn more.
Periods of high temperatures cause a condition known as “scorch” where all the available water is taken up by the grassroots. When water is no longer available to the roots the Photosynthetic cycle, within the plant, stops working resulting in the reduction of Chlorophyll. It’s the Chlorophyll that makes the grass leaf green therefore the grass turns a straw-like colour.
Sandy soils are affected quicker than loam or clay-based soils, due to their soil structure, they cannot hold onto moisture.
The resulting damage caused is seldom permanent, however it can require a substantial investment to repair badly damaged lawns.
Wetting agents improve the penetration of water into, and the distribution of water throughout the soil beneath the lawn. They address hydrophobicity, a condition that occurs in lawns as a result of environmental conditions. This can be exacerbated by poor soil composition and/or thatch buildup.
Over the past few years, our climate has been changing resulting in far hotter, dryer Summers. These conditions have a serious effect on the appearance of our lawns. Generally occurring just when we want to start enjoying them the most.
The simple answer is regular watering, first thing in the morning. but this is not always possible, therefore to help you manage these warmer conditions we have worked with our supplier to develop two new treatments.
Applied in granule form it breaks down quickly providing rapid penetration into the root zone. The technology in the product formulation provides a long-lasting residual effect ensuring one application persists for up to five months. It works by forming a barrier below the root system, holding onto water, and making it available to the plant. The whole process takes about eight weeks to become effective, therefore it needs to be applied BEFORE the problem occurs. One application per year is sufficient to protect your lawn through Summer. However, a second application may be required if we have a hot September.
The product has been trialled at the sports turf research Institue (UK’s leading turf research consultancy) and has been proven to reduce the hydrophobicity (the physical property of a molecule that is seemingly repelled from a mass of water) of a water-repellent root zone for up to 5 months.
The best time to apply this treatment is March-April. In exceptionally hot summers a second application may be beneficial later in the summer.

Applied in liquid form it contains a penetration aid that encourages water to move faster and deeper into the soil down to the root zone. Research has proved that treated lawns require less than half the water necessary to achieve the desired soil moisture level of 15% when compared to untreated lawns. Each application lasts about 2-4 weeks depending upon the rainfall and the soil type. Monthly applications are recommended throughout the hot period.
Curative wetting agents should be applied at the first signs of the lawn drying.
