Worms And Your Lawn

worm casts

If you notice small mounds of soil on the surface of your lawn from late Autumn to Spring you will almost certainly have worms casting on the surface of your lawn. Whilst worms do improve soil structure by creating channels that aid the penetration of water and nutrients deep into the soil, the casts they leave on the surface can ruin an otherwise fine lawn.

The soil within the casts can be slimy as it consists of both the soil that has passed through the worm and the natural secretions from the worm’s digestive system. Leaving these casts on the surface of the lawn will result in them being smeared across the grass through the actions of mowing and walking on the lawn. The soil “pats” created are an ideal seeding area for newly germinating weeds and moss.

If your lawn is suffering from casting worms why not take advantage of the Lawnscience lawn review service. One of our fully trained lawn care professionals will be happy to arrange a free lawn review with you, during which they will identify the issue(s) and provide you with a fully costed solution for you to consider.
