What is Rust

Picture of rust on a grass leaf

If the leaves of your lawn are turning straw coloured, your lawn might well be infected with rust.

Rust, usually caused by Puccini or Uromyces fungi, is a common disease of UK lawns attacking rye grasses and smooth stalked meadow grass in particular, but can also occur on the majority of UK lawn grasses.

The disease favours mild wet / humid weather conditions such as those in early Summer through to late Autumn, but it can occur throughout the year.

It is easily identified by the pustules which break through the surface of the grass leaf causing it to turn orange to brown. These pustules contain thousands of spores which spread the disease.

If you suspect that your lawn is infected with Rust why not take advantage of the Lawnscience lawn review service. One of our fully trained lawn care professionals will be happy to arrange a free lawn review with you, during which they will identify the issue(s) and provide you with a fully costed solution for you to consider.
